My first 2 weeks in New Caledonia

Il est bon ou quoi?

Hello everybody, Hallo meine Lieben!

After 2 weeks I finally adapt to the time difference and tropical climat here. Yay! Now I feel comfortable. But I never thought that I would have problems with the weather here. And even though I love hot temperatures I guess it is a little too hot and sticky for me right now. But I can deal with it ;) In a few month, around June/July, the weather will changes a little and it will be a bit colder, at least during the night.  

Nach zwei Wochen bin ich langsam in Neukaledonien angekommen. Mittlerweile habe ich mich an die Zeitumstellung gewöhnt und mich auf das tropische Klima eingestellt. Trotzdem ist es an manchen Tagen sehr, fast schon zu heiß und drückend für mich und ich habe mit Kopfschmerzen zu kämpfen. Gegen Juni/Juli wird es dann etwas kühler. Allerdings nur am Abend und in der Nacht. Tagsüber soll es wohl sommerlich beleiben! ;)

The sun is really intensive. Although there is a lot of wind and it´s quite cloudy some days you will have sunburn when you don´t use sunblocker! And I know what I´m talking about. I experienced myself! The worst sunburn ever - on my feet. It hurt badly and my ankle was swollen for almost one week. Now the red colour of my skin turned into a nice brown that seems to be almost black compared to the white soles of my feet...

Die Sonne ist hier sehr intensiv und ich habe mir gleich einen fetten Sonnenbrand auf den Füßen eingefangen! Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass das so schmerzt :( Mein Knöchel war für fast eine Woche angeschwollen. Jetzt ist alles wieder gut und meine Füße sind mega braun, fast schwarz! 

What fascinates me the most is this unique nature here. It´s beauty is amazing. New Caledonia offers everything. The beautiful sea with it´s different colours of blue, the mountains and a diverse flora and fauna. Especially I like the combination of pines, mangrove and palm trees. Moreover, it´s so cool that there are so many exotic animals I have never seen in nature before like turtles, dolphins, sharks (don´t worry, just some harmless riff sharks, I hope so) rays, seahorses and also wales. I´m so excited to see them all! ;) Untill now I just got to know some big cockroaches and geckos in my room... Ahhh!

Was mich am meisten hier fasziniert ist die Natur. Die verschiedenen Bäume (Palmen, Mangroven und Pinien), wunderschönen Blumen, der Ozean und natürlich die exotische Fauna. Tiere wie Delphine, Schildkröten, Haie (keine Angst, angeblich nur harmlose Riffhaie), Seepferdchen und sogar Wale sind hier beheimatet. Die will ich alle sehen! Ich bin schon ganz aufgeregt. Bis jetzt durfte ich nur mit Kakerlaken und Geckos in meinem Zimmer Bekanntschaft machen. Ahhh! 

Tricot Rayé 

The good thing is that there are no dangerous animals in New Caledonia. No crocodiles, pythons, scorpions or spiders like in Australia. There is just one animal you should definitively avoid touching - the "Tricot Rayé", a poisonous sea snake. Usually, these snakes are shy and not aggressive. Bites are extremly rare but can be deatly. However, I should be careful!

Die Menschen hier in Neukaledonien lieben ihr Land. Zudem sind sie ebenfalls sehr mit Australien verbunden. Was den Unterschied für sie ausmacht sind die Tiere hier und dort. Denn in Neukaledonien gibt es, im Gegensatz zu Australien, so gut wie keine gefährlichen Tiere. Keine Krokodile, Skorpione oder giftigen Spinnen. Vor einem Tier sollte man sich jedoch in Acht nehmen - der "Tricot Rayé", einer giftigen Seeschlange. Sie soll zwar sehr scheu und nicht aggressiv sein, aber ihr Biss ist tödlich...

Unfortunately, you cannot easily go around the island by car and discover nice places and beaches. A lot of people in New Caledonia own a large land. So, most of the areas close to the sea are private and you cannot enter. At least it´s like that in the South Province. The best is to know some local people to see the real New Caledonia and the way of life here. My tutor José already invited me a few times to his property. He and his girlfriend Marie-Luc own a large land. They have 4 wild horses, goats, some chicken, a big garden and two beautiful girls – Luna and Elsa. At the moment they are starting to build a house on the top of the hill of their property. From there you have an awesome view over the countryside and sea. And when it is not too windy you can see the beautiful shades of blue of the Pacific Ocean. Magnifique!

Leider ist es gar nicht so einfach die Insel selbst mit dem Auto zu umfahren und zu erkunden. Viele Leute hier besitzen große Grundstücke am Wasser. Dass heißt, dass ein Großteil des Geländes privatisiert und der Zutritt verboten ist. So ist es jedenfalls im südlichen Teil Neukaledoniens. Zum Glück kenne ich bereits ein paar Großgrundbesitzer! ;) Zum Beispiel meinen Tutor José. Er besitzt zusammen mit seiner Frau Marie-Luc ein riesiges Grundstück mit atemberaubenden Blick auf den Pazifik. Außerdem hat er 4 Wildpferde, ein paar Hühner und Ziegen und 2 süße Kinder - Luna und Elsa. Gerade sind sie dabei ein Haus auf dem Grundstück zu bauen. Wie unvorstellbar schön muss das sein, dort zu wohnen!

Besides this beautiful property I also had the chance to see another untouched pieces of New Caledonia. My French teacher here, Laurence, invited me for a picnic with her family and some friends last weekend. She also owns a huge land together with her husband. So this time I was going to the mountains to spend the day with them at the river “Ouenghi”. We were swimming in the river, had lunch together und due to the fact that Laurence has three sons, I had to do some things boys actually just do, like playing with remote-controlled vehicles and boats. Haha. It was much fun! ;)

Einen anderen tollen Tag habe ich letzte Woche Sonntag mit der Familie Schall verbracht. Laurence Schall ist hier Lehrerin an der Schule Saint Dominique Savio und gibt mir nebenbei ein bisschen Französischunterricht. Sie besitzt zusammen mit ihrem Mann ebenfalls ein großes Grundstück, nicht am Meer, aber in den Bergen am Fluss "Ouenghi". Dort durfte ich einen Tag zusammen mit ihrer Familie und Freunden verbringen. Wunderschön! Der Wasser dort ist total klar und von der Temperatur nicht kalt, sondern angenehm warm. Da sie drei Jungs hat, durfte ich an diesem Tag viele "Jungssachen machen", wie ferngesteuerte Autos und Boote fahren ;) War auch mal cool!  

      

 

 

 

All in all, I can say that the Caledonian people love their country and they love to be close to nature. I am glad to be part of the project and to get to know so many different people. Their hospitality is amazing. They made me feel comfortable so I began to settle down. In the beginning it was not easy for me. Actually, I am the only volunteer in La Foa, a really small village. Here is not much going on ;) It is quite different to my experiences I gained during my Erasmus time in Istanbul; different but also very special and great! I guess the six month here will be another unforgettable period of my life! I am looking forward to it!    

Allgemein kann ich sagen, dass die Menschen ihr Land hier sehr lieben, vor allem die Natur. Ich bin wirklich froh, dass ich eine so tolle Erfahrung machen darf. Auch wenn es bisher nicht immer leicht für mich war, besonders die erste Woche. Ich bin hier die einzige Freiwillige. Das ist etwas ganz anderes als mein Erasmusleben, das ich in Istanbul geführt habe. Eine ganz neue, tolle Erfahrung aber auch Herausforderung. Ich bin gespannt, was mich noch erwartet! ;)

Ah, by the way. The heading: "Il est bon ou quoi?" is a typical Caledonian expression. It means "Ca va?" (How are you?) Especially the native people are using this phrase. 
My next post will be about le Collège Saint Dominique Savio. The kids are awsome! You will see... ;)

Achso, und die Überschrift: "Il est bon ou quoi?" ist eine typisch Kaledonische Redensart und bedeutet soviel wie: "Wie geht es dir?". In Frankreich gibt es diesen Ausdruck so gar nicht ;) 
Als nächstes werde ich ein bisschen über meine eigentliche Aufgabe hier berichten - der Arbeit mit den Kindern in der Schule! Seid gespannt. Die Kinder fetzen! ;)
